Excitement builds for centennial homecoming
Chadron State College students and employees are gearing up for the institution’s centennial homecoming celebration, now less than two months away.
Many special activities are planned for this year’s event to highlight the institution’s 14-month centennial observance. From the 5k run Saturday morning Oct. 1, to the fireworks display that night, organizers says there will be something for all ages to enjoy.
“We already are gaining a lot of interest in this year’s homecoming celebration and are expecting a high level of involvement from the community, faculty, staff, alumni and students,” said Karen Pope, CSC’s director of alumni who has served as a point person for those planning centennial activities. “It will be a memorable day and a fitting tribute to CSC’s first 100 years.”
Much of the activity will precede the football game against the Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWolves on the Saturday of homecoming. To help mark the significance of this year, the parade route is being reversed to run from north to south, ending at the CSC campus, where a pregame festival with food and family-friendly activities is scheduled on the Dean’s Green.
As part of the pregame festivities, the college plans a dedication ceremony for a new statue east of Old Admin and the new Centennial Flag Plaza and entrance portal north of the building. The event will include campus tours and historical exhibits. Also, live eagles from the Raptor Education Foundation will be on display.
The Eagles’ volleyball team will be home for three evening matches during homecoming week, and an alumni band is forming to perform a concert Saturday night in the Nelson Physical Activity Center. As another special feature to celebrate the centennial, the Chadron State Foundation is opening its annual gala and board of trustees dinner to the public the Friday night of homecoming. The annual event will help the college celebrate its first 100 years and its success in the Vision 2011 fundraising campaign. The deadline for the $40 registration is Monday, Aug. 8, and may be paid to the CSC Alumni Office.
The week preceding homecoming will include many of the traditional activities, including the bed sheet decorating contest, spirit rally and crowning of the royalty. Community members and businesses are being asked to show their CSC spirit by decorating their yards and storefronts.
