Native American celebration is Saturday
November is Native American Heritage Month and Chadron State College is commemorating the region’s rich American Indian culture with an event Saturday, Nov. 5. The first Native American Gathering will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Student Center.
CSC and its White Buffalo Club have annually hosted a powwow, but organizers have elected to shift the focus of the event this year to educate people about American Indian culture. Laure Sinn, CSC coordinator of student activities, said this year’s event will build upon the educational mission of past powwows.
“We have always used the powwow as a way to educate our students and the community about Native American Culture,” Sinn said. “We think that with this change we will be able to bring more of an educational focus to the event and the College’s Native American Month activities.”
Guss Yellow Hair will be speaking about Lakota culture and history from 10 a.m.-noon. White River Crossing, a drum group from Pine Ridge, S.D., will begin playing at 10 a.m. Individuals and families are encouraged to come and talk with these presenters about Lakota culture.
Despite the changes in the event’s concentration, organizers are still encouraging vendors, dancers and drummers to take part in Saturday’s festivities and help celebrate Native American culture.
